What is and does a medium do?

In the strictest definition, a medium is a transmitter or carrier. In this article, of course, we are not talking about painting mediums, radios or televisions, but about people with a psychic gift who are capable of transmitting and receiving messages from spirits, angels or other non-material entities.

Of course, this in itself does not say much about the different kinds of mediums and their ways of working. Not every medium uses the same techniques, and not every medium has the same gifts or purposes. To give you a better idea of what the different types of mediums are and what they do, we will discuss in this article what you can expect from the most common types of medium.

We talk in this article about the gifts that a medium can possess, the means that a medium can use to strengthen or facilitate his gift, the messengers or beings that a medium can address, the different currents or types of mediumship, and finally, the different types of mediums.

Types of psychic abilities

There are many different paranormal gifts that turn an ordinary person into a medium. In some traditions it is believed that these gifts are handed down from generation to generation, in other traditions it is believed that it is possible to teach such a gift. Also, in some traditions a strict distinction is made between gifts that work with the spirit world and gifts that work with other more earthly energies.

Clairaudience

A clairaudience medium hears messages from angels, spirits, demons or other entities. He or she can transmit these messages to his or her clients, and is often also capable of mutual communication.

Clairvoyance

A clairvoyant medium receives the messages in the form of images. Just think of the stereotypical image of the medium with the crystal ball. That crystal ball is no longer the only or main instrument of a medium, but is a good example to illustrate the clairvoyant gift.

Clairsentience

A clairvoyant medium gets the messages through feelings. These can be emotions, but they can also be messages that the medium receives through the sense of touch. They often work with objects of deceased persons or persons to be studied.

Clarity

This form of brightness is common, but no less valid! A bright-smelling medium smells, for example, the presence of angels, impending death or even illnesses.

Clear knowing

Knowing clearly is one of the more abstract forms of clarity. A clairvoyant medium feels things, and a good clairvoyant medium can also distinguish between what he himself feels and what messages he gets from the entities. Consider this as an overactive or very strong intuition.

Telepathy

Telepathy is the feeling or reading of thoughts. Not many people really believe in telepathy, so somewhere the concept has lost its true meaning: now it is often used as an umbrella term for all of the above gifts. However, telepathy in itself is also a gift that a medium could have.

Healing

Some mediums are able to heal others by means of hand layouts, for example. Their gift differs a little from the other mediums: they are not necessarily there to answer questions, but use the same energies that are used for that purpose, in order to bring enlightenment or healing to their client.

Mediums or means of the medium

Now that we know the different gifts, it is important to dwell for a moment on the fact that one medium can possess several of these gifts at the same time. In addition, there are forms of clarity, and there are also many means that a medium can use to receive the messages. Just think of cards, the stars or, as we said earlier, the crystal ball. These are actually the mediums of the medium!

Types of mediumship

Spiritual

A spiritual medium often turns to spirits. He or she will address the questions of the client to a spirit or deceased, and ensures that mutual communication becomes possible.

Channeling

A medium working with channeling will not address spirits, but rather work with the energies of the cosmos, as described above, or its entities.

Healing

A healing medium is not concerned with messages, but with the energy and well-being of his or her client.

Mentally

A mental medium uses mental gifts to receive messages. He or she does not necessarily use spirits or entities, but can read and interpret the energies of the cosmos.

Physical

A physical medium can be a healing medium, but can also be a medium that manifests things here on earth that he or she receives from the spirit realm, the cosmos or some other kind of parallel universe.

Theoretically

A theoretical medium makes use of things like numerology, astrology or other thoroughly described theories. Whether such a medium complements theory with intuition is a personal choice and will therefore depend from medium to medium.

The types of mediums

Now that we have discussed the gifts and means of the medium, we can move on to the descriptions of the different types of mediums and their activities. Keep in mind that this list is only a selection, and each medium will act a little differently. This list will hopefully give you an idea of what you can expect from the types of medium discussed.

Astrologer

The astrologer will use astronomy or astrology to serve his client. Using for example the Chinese zodiac, he or she will try to expose the personality of his client.

Numerologist

Of course, a numerologist uses numerology. Just like the astrologer, the numerologist has information about the personality of his or her client. Based on location coordinates, data and other data, he or she can make statements about the future and what his or her client can expect.

Healer

A healer or healing medium is a special kind of medium. He or she is not so much concerned with deciphering what the future will bring or with answering life’s questions, but rather with healing and restoring physical and mental pain.

Fortune teller

A fortune teller uses all kinds of divination to try to predict the future. For this he or she can turn to cards, crystal balls, rune stones or other means.

Psychic

The term “psychic” is mainly used to refer to mediums that make use of the gift of clairvoyance. They can use crystal spheres or reflective surfaces for this purpose, but that is not necessary. A psychic can also go into a trance, or open his or her mind in such a way that the images come in.

Channeling medium

A channeling medium will receive messages from the cosmic via one or more forms of clarity, and can also pass on messages itself. Thus the communication is always mutual.

Spiritual medium

Like a channeling medium, a spiritual medium will be concerned with the passing on and receiving of messages, but does so mainly between his client and the spirits of deceased persons.

Online medium

In principle, an online medium can be any of the above mentioned mediums, but its operation is limited by the lack of physical presence. Nevertheless, such a medium can also do his or her job from a distance and answer your questions.
